The problem is keeping a dog on long-term steroids month after month without ever asking why the skin keeps reacting.
My position is straightforward: treat the cause of the skin disease rather than hide it. Short-term relief makes sense when a dog is miserable and we need to break the itch cycle while we run the diagnosis. It becomes a problem when relief is the only plan, because the underlying allergy keeps progressing underneath, the skin infections come back, and the dog needs higher and higher doses to get the same relief. How We Diagnose It at the Clinic
